They were the ones who were learning how to Moonstomp to the Liquidator and discovering who Prince Buster was at the local dancehall while you were worrying about how much value your house had lost because some of “them” had moved in down the road. They were not the ones a generation ago who were putting up signs saying No Blacks No Dogs No Irish. They aren’t still clinging to the Idea that mainstream politics gives a shit about them. They don’t live in the leafy villages of The Chipping Norton Set and think multiculturalism is wonderful because there is this great little Thai restaurant and Polish plumbers are so reasonable. It’s easier to describe what the EDL aren’t Rather than what they are. You dismiss them this way because it’s easy, this way you don’t actually have to think, you can shout racist and get on with tweeting about The Apprentice.
It’s oh so easy to dismiss them as far right drunken thugs looking for trouble. So who are Tommy Robinson and the EDL? I’m sure you all think you know, you’ve long ago made up your minds and you are damn sure you not going to let a few things like facts get in the way. At least that was the message from the panel of a BBC Current affairs program called Free Speech that was broadcast without any hint of Irony or shame. You see it’s OK to threaten Tommy’s life, It’s Ok to threaten to rape his wife and kids because he’s a racist and that makes it OK. In constant fear not only for his life but that of his family.
